The shrine is said to have been founded during the Hoji era (1247-1249 CE). Its origin lies in Minamoto no Yoshimitsu enshrining a hawk he saw while praying for victory in battle. In the late Edo period, a Sankyo (a wooden plaque with a mathematical problem) was dedicated by a mathematician, and some of these are now registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Adachi Ward. The current shrine buildings were constructed through a donation from the Satake clan during the Ansei era and were completed in 1875 (Meiji 8).
