The exact date of founding is unknown, but since ancient times it has served as the tutelary deity (Ujigami) of Hanahara Village, known as Myōken Daimyōjin. Around 1400 CE (Eikyō era), Susanoo-no-Mikoto was invited (Kanjo) to the shrine for the purpose of pest control. In 1868 CE (Meiji 1), the subsidiary shrines were merged, and the name was changed to Hanahara Shrine. In 1912 CE (Taishō 1), it was merged into Moroki Shrine, but after the war, it was separated again along with Ara Shrine.
