The shrine is said to have originated when the first Satsuma daimyo, Shimazu Tadahiro, installed a sacred statue of Minamoto no Yoritomo. The current main hall was built in 1713 CE (Shōtoku 3) in the Gongen-zukuri (deity manifestation) architectural style. Due to its splendor, it is nicknamed the 'Nikko of Satsuma.'
