It is said that the shrine began approximately 800 years ago in the Kamakura period when the local lord, Yukiyoshi Yoshijiro, enshrined the deity Gyokuten Tenno. During the Tokugawa era, it was strongly patronized by the Tokugawa clan and the Shimazu clan, among others. In 1907 (Meiji 40), the shrine changed its name from Yakumo Shrine to Haneda Shrine.
