History

In 1856 CE (Ansei 3), the shrine was originally founded as an Inari shrine under imperial orders for the development of Ezo (Hokkaido). In 1898 CE (Meiji 31), it received a branch spirit of Toyuke-Ookami from Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine). In 1903 CE (Meiji 36), it was renamed Hassan Shrine. The precincts contain ancient ruins dating back to around the 10th century, including burial mounds and circular stone rows.

What visitors say

Although the grounds are compact, the exterior is impressive. The layout is well-organized, with convenient access from parking to the worship area and the shop selling omamori (protective amulets). Seasonal features include flower-adorned water basins for purification and limited-edition omikuji (fortune slips). During major festivals like the annual grand festival, food stalls are set up. The shrine is within walking distance from JR Hassan-Chuo Station and is easily accessible via subway.
