History
The shrine traces its origins to a Myoken Shrine established by Taira no Masakado, the progenitor of the Soma clan. The current shrine was established in 1611 by Soma Toshitane within the grounds of Nakamura Castle. The present shrine buildings were constructed in 1643 by Soma Yoshitane and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. During the Meiji era, the main deity, Myoken Bosatsu (Myoken Bodhisattva), was removed due to the Haibutsu Kishaku (destruction of Buddhism) movement, and the shrine was renamed Soma Nakamura Shrine.
