An ancient shrine with origins in the Wadō era, it was granted the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade in 874 CE (Shōō 16). It was revered through visits by Emperor Kazan and as a place of prayer for the daimyō of the Ōshū domain. The shrine was temporarily destroyed by fire during the Tenshō era but was revived in 1875 CE (Meiji 8). It was elevated to the status of a Kengū shrine in 1884 CE (Meiji 17), and Yamano-hiko-no-Mikoto was added as an enshrined deity in 1991 CE (Heisei 3).
