History
The shrine was founded in 940 CE (Tenkyō 3) as the general guardian deity of the Yamane 90,000 koku domain. In 1595 CE (Bunroku 4), the priest Shunsei of the island of Hōin built the shrine buildings and named it Hie Myōō Hachiko Myōjin Shrine. Rebuilding and renovation took place in 1667 CE (Kanbun 7) and during the Meiji era. The shrine buildings within the precincts were spared from the Hachijō air raid of 1945 CE (Shōwa 20).
