History
In 860 CE, the monk Jichido Daishi Ennin founded Tachiarai-ji Temple and established this shrine by inviting a branch spirit from Hie Taisha, following the example of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei. Initially called Sanno Gongen or Omiya Dai-Gongen, it became a major center for Sanno Shinto in the Tohoku region. In 1870, under the Order for the Separation of Buddhism and Shinto, it was separated from Tachiarai-ji Temple and renamed Hie Shrine as the guardian deity of Yadera Village.
