History
Prior to the 8th century, Itadai-no-kami (also known as Iwada-no-kami) was enshrined in Sakai District. In 764 CE, Fushin-no-kami was added to the worship. In 787 CE, the shrine was relocated to the vicinity of the current northern area. In 1181 CE, the 174 major and minor shrines from the 16 districts of Harima Province were consolidated here, and it came to be known as the Head Shrine of Harima Province and the Fuchū Shrine. In 1581 CE, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi constructed Himeji Castle, the shrine was moved to its present location. It was destroyed by fire during the Himeji air raid of 1945 but was rebuilt after the war.
