It is said that the shrine buildings were constructed in 807 CE (Daido 2) on the site where prayers for the suppression of volcanic eruptions on the eastern slopes of Mount Fuji were offered in the early Heian period. During the Edo period, it flourished as the head shrine of the Higashiguchi climbing route, supported by Miko (shrine attendants) under the protection of the Odawara Domain and the Yoshida family in Kyoto. It was elevated to the status of a Kenja (prefectural shrine) in 1886 (Meiji 19) and is currently registered as part of a World Cultural Heritage site.
