The temple was founded by Hyouga, one of the Six Elder Monks. It was destroyed by fire in the first year of the Keio era (1865 CE) but was subsequently rebuilt. In the seventh year of the Meiji era (1874 CE), it merged with Ryogen-bo, and later absorbed En-bo, Gyokuzen-bo, and Houshun-bo. The temple relocated to its current site in the fourteenth year of the Showa era (1939 CE).
