Originally located in 'Kihata-dani' at the foot of Mount Hiji, the shrine was moved to the grounds of the Shingon sect temple Kouraku-ji in 1646 (Shoho 3). During the Kanbun era (1661-1673), it was relocated to its current site and worshipped as a local tutelary deity. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1868 (Meiji 1), the shrine was renamed 'Hiji-yama Shrine'. In 1959, it was added to the list of Hyakku-sha shrines under the Association of Shinto Shrines. Although the shrine buildings were destroyed by the atomic bombing in 1945, they were rebuilt in 1954.
