History

In 752 CE (Tenpyo-Shoho 4), the divine spirit was invited from Usa Jingu (Usa Grand Shrine), and the shrine was established as Kume Hachiman-gu. Subsequently, the shrine buildings were constructed by imperial decree of Emperor Koken. The shrine underwent repeated reconstructions and renovations by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the Kono clan, and the lords of the Matsuyama Domain. During the Meiji period, it transitioned from a Kosha (village shrine) to a Kensha (prefectural shrine).
