It was formerly located near Nagaoka Station and was relocated to its current site as part of the castle construction plans by the Hori clan. During the Genroku era, Aoki Suwa Shrine was merged into it, and it became the intermediary shrine for Suwa Honsha (the current Suwa Grand Shrine). It had a head temple called Chikei-in, belonging to the Tōzan school of Shugendō, and is also known as Chikei-sama due to this name.
