The shrine was founded in 653 CE (Hakui 4) by inviting the deity from Usa Hachiman Grand Shrine in Buzen Province. Records indicate that the shrine buildings were rebuilt in 848 CE (Kajo 1). In 1648 CE (Keian 1), the Tokugawa Shogun granted the shrine a Goshuin (a shrine's calligraphic seal stamp) and a land grant of nine koku, after which it prospered as a Goshuin estate for over two hundred and ten years. The buildings were rebuilt with tile roofing in 1896 CE (Meiji 29). Restoration work began in 1985 CE (Showa 60), resulting in the current copper plate roofing.
