History
According to the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), the shrine was founded when the aratama of Amaterasu Omikami was enshrined following a divine oracle during Empress Jingū's campaign against the Three Han kingdoms. During the medieval period, it was revered as a deity of poetry and received donations and support for reconstruction from figures such as Minamoto no Yoritomo and Toyotomi Hideyori. In 1724 CE (Kyōhō 9), Tokugawa Yoshimune relocated the shrine to its current site on Hirota Mountain.
