The shrine's origins date back to 1057 CE (Tenki 5), when the army of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and his son Yoshiie held a grand prayer ceremony for the pacification of bandits while camping at the site. The shrine buildings were constructed in 1058 CE (Kouhei 1), enshrining three deities: Take-Mikazuchi-no-Mikoto, Futsunushi-no-Mikoto, and Tsunetatefunado-Ookami. In 1871 CE (Meiji 4), the shrine was renamed Nikko Shrine, and later changed to its current name, Hisaishi Shrine.
