Hodoin (Hodo-in)
京都市左京区南禅寺福地町
The head temple of the Nanzenji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, holding the highest rank among all Rinzai temples in Japan.
History
Originating from the Zenrinji-den (Zenrinji Hall), a detached palace built by Emperor Kameyama, it was named Ryuon-zan Zenrin Zenji (Zenrin Zen Temple on Mount Ryuon) in 1301 CE (Sho-o 4), with Mukan Fumon as its founding abbot. It was later renamed Taihei Kokoku Nanzan Zenji (Taihei Kokoku Nanzan Zen Temple). During the Muromachi period, it was ranked above the Kyoto Gozan (Five Mountains) and the Kamakura Gozan (Five Mountains) in the special category of 'Above the Five Mountains.'

What visitors say
The grounds feature many cherry trees, with the blossoms around the Hodo-in hall boasting lush branches that create a magnificent landscape. While the interior of the Hodo-in hall is not open to general visitors, one can peer in to see the 'Panryu' (Coiling Dragon) painting on the ceiling. It is customary to worship by lighting incense at the Jo-koro (Perpetual Incense Burner) located in front of the hall.
