In 1902 (Meiji 35), a small shrine was established under the direction of former 7th Division Commander Omasu Naobito to hold a soul-summoning ceremony for those who died for the nation in Hokkaido and the garrison soldiers who perished during the settlement of the frontier. In 1939 (Shōwa 14), it was renamed Hokkaido Gokoku Shrine and began enshrining the war dead of Hokkaido and the former Karafuto region from the Boshin War through the Great East Asian War. In 1965 (Shōwa 40), the main hall was significantly expanded, allowing the shrine to fully embody its status as the head shrine for the collective enshrinement of the spirits of the entire region.
