Located in Chuo-ku, Sapporo, this shrine is revered as the head shrine of Hokkaido as the guardian deity of Hokkaido. The enshrined deities are the three deities of development (Okuninushi-no-Kami, Oonamuchi-no-Kami, and Sukunabikona-no-Kami) and Emperor Meiji. In 1869 (Meiji 2), by imperial decree of Emperor Meiji, the three deities of development were enshrined in Tokyo as guardian deities of development when Ezo was renamed Hokkaido. In 1871 (Meiji 4), they were moved to the current site and the shrine was named Sapporo Shrine. In 1964 (Showa 39), Emperor Meiji was added as an enshrined deity and the shrine was renamed Hokkaido Jingu, its current name. It is recognized by the National Ichinomiya Association as the 'New Ichinomiya of Ezo Province'. The shrine grounds cover approximately 180,000 square meters, adjacent to Maruyama Park, and are known as a famous spot for cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and Ezo mountain cherries.

6月14日〜16日例祭（札幌まつり）
「札幌まつり」として親しまれる最大の祭。神輿渡御と山車。
6月14〜16日、北海道神宮で最も重要な例祭で「札幌まつり」として親しまれる。最終日には平安装束の行列と神輿、山車が市内を練り歩く神輿渡御が行われる。
