Founded in 1343 CE (Genkō 3) by Tsugimitsu Kiren, the Grand Priest of Usa Jingu, who invited the high priest Daimitsu from Nara's Sai-daji to establish it as the family temple of the Tsugimitsu clan. In 1334 CE (Kenmu 1), it was designated as an imperial prayer temple by Emperor Go-Daigo. Initially of the Shingon Ritsu sect, it later transitioned through the Ko-gi Shingon sect (Toji branch) and is now a temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect.
