Founded in 724 CE (Shenki 1), it is said to have been established by Kobo Daishi Kukai in 808 CE (Daido 1). In 901 CE (Engi 1), it was designated as a temple under imperial patronage by Emperor Daigo. In 1649 CE (Keian 2), it received a land grant certificate from the Edo Shogunate. In the past, it was a head temple overseeing 36 subordinate temples.
