After the extinction of the Ganjoji temple founded in Nagashima, Ise Province, it was revived in the Kiyosu area by Xianru, the 11th head of Honganji. It was relocated to its current site due to the transfer of Kiyosu Castle during the construction of Nagoya Castle. After a period of confiscation by the Edo Shogunate, it was returned in 1717 CE (Kyoho 2) and came to be called "Nagoya Gobo" as a branch temple of Saihongonji (West Honganji). It was renamed "Honganji Nagoya Betsuin" in 1879 CE (Meiji 12).
