Founded in the late Heian period, the shrine boasts a history spanning over 800 to 900 years. According to the 'Kasuga Shinmaki' (Records of the Kasuga Shrine), it is said that the enshrined deities were moved here in 1110 along with Fujiwara no Kuni, a senior official at the Kasuga Taisha in Nara. It served as the head shrine for ten Kasuga shrines located in the ten villages included in the Kawaguchi-sho estate. It is said that portable shrines (mikoshi) from each of these ten villages gathered together for the spring and autumn festivals.
