Honmanji Temple
京都市上京区鶴山町16
A historic Nichiren sect temple located in Nakagyoku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kobu-ji (Kobun Ryubu-ji), and its principal image is the Jikai Mandala (Mandala of the Ten Worlds).
History
The temple was established in 1410 CE (Oei 17) as a branch of Honkoku-ji. It was founded by Nichishu, who was revered as the founding patriarch, by the priest Nichishu of Gyokudo Myoin. After being destroyed by fire during the Tenmon Hokke Rebellion in 1536 CE (Tenmon 5), it was relocated to its current site in 1539 CE (Tenmon 8) by Kampaku Konoe Akitomi. It subsequently became a temple under imperial patronage of Emperor Go-Nara. In 1751 CE (Horei 1), it served as a government prayer site for the recovery of Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune's health.
