History

The shrine's origins date back to 1192 CE (Kenkyu 2), when Minamoto no Yoritomo donated a vermilion-painted reliquary to protect the land of Honmoku. During the Edo period, due to the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, it came under the management of the Tendai sect temple Tamon-in. Following the Order for the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism in 1868 CE (Meiji 1), the shrine became independent and now stands as the head shrine for the Honmoku region. Although the shrine buildings were destroyed by air raids during World War II, they were rebuilt after the war at a new location in Honmoku-Wada, where the current structures stand.
