Founded in Osaka in 1585 to pray for the repose of the soul of Kato Kiyomasa's father, Kiyotada, the temple relocated to the Kumamoto Castle town in 1600. Upon Kiyomasa's death in 1611, his statue was enshrined at the Jochi-bo on Mount Nakao in accordance with his last will. The temple moved to its current location in 1614. Although the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism led to the division of the Jochi-bo and the temple, the main hall and Jochi-bo structures, which were destroyed in the Satsuma Rebellion, were rebuilt in 1894 (Meiji 27), giving them their present form.
