The shrine's origin is said to date back to around 1200 CE, when Kanazu Kojirō Suneji excavated two golden divine statues while constructing a castle and enshrined them as Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto. Later, the Niitsu clan received the divine statues from the Kanazu clan and enshrined them as guardian deities within Niitsu Castle. The current site is believed to have been established around 1573 CE (Tenshō 1), and the divine statues were returned to this location in 1882 CE (Meiji 15).
