After relocating to Tango Province to escape the Heiji Rebellion, the shrine was moved to its current location during the Bunchu period (1352–1355 CE), where it became known as Horikawa Ebisu Shrine. By the mid-Edo period, it had become recognized as one of the 'Three Great Ebisu Shrines' representing Osaka's Tokoebisu tradition.
