History
Founded in 1165 CE (Eiman 1) or 1560 CE (Eiroku 3). The area was once a shoen (estate) of Ise Jingu known as Katsushi Ongyō (Katsushi Imperial Rice Granary), which is why a branch spirit was enshrined from Ise Jingu. It served as the tutelary deity of Horikiri Village, with Gokurakuji Temple acting as its bettoji (attendant temple).

What visitors say
Situated in a densely populated residential area, this compact shrine features a limited grounds layout with subsidiary shrines (seshya/matsusha) and a Kagura-den (kagura hall) standing close together. The grounds offer sights such as stone statues, komainu (lion-dog statues), and komaki (fox statues), and depending on the season, you may also see Akigane (Autumn Firefly) butterflies fluttering about. Goshuin (shrine calligraphic seal stamps) are available for Tenzo Shrine and its concurrently managed shrines, and a limited-edition Goshuin is distributed during the Ayame Matsuri (Iris Festival).
