History
This temple of the Shingon Daikaku-ji sect is said to have been founded by Priest Fugen during the reign of Emperor Kazan. Until around the Keio period, the main object of worship was Enmei Jizo (the Jizo Bodhisattva who prolongs life). Later, Horikoshi Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokiteshvara), worshipped by commoners for healing skin diseases, became the main object of worship. Around 1943, the temple changed its name from Hozoji to Horikoshi-ji.
