The temple was established in 1727 CE (Kyoho 12) as Sanzo-in Horrin Zenji. In 1945, shortly after the war, the Okigari Daruma-do (Rising Daruma Hall) was built to pray for Japan's post-war recovery. Since then, the temple has been affectionately known by its common name, 'Daruma-ji'.
