According to shrine tradition, in 757 CE, Ohtomo Yoshichika enshrined the deity Dairoku Gongen (a syncretic deity of Mount Dairoku) and founded the shrine at its current location. During the medieval period, it was revered as a sacred site of Shugendo (a syncretic tradition of mountain asceticism). In the early modern period, it was highly valued as one of the three major shrines of the Akita Domain. In the early Edo period, the Moriya family served as the Betto (lay administrators), but after being expelled for being held responsible for a fire, the Ohtomo family has once again served as the priests.
