Founded as one of the central shrines (the Six Shrines of Takagayama) in the faith of Mount Takagayama. According to shrine tradition, when Fujiwara no Mitsutaka was subduing demons, an eel in the Shougawa Valley showed him the correct path; this eel is considered a messenger of Meirei Tenno (Venus). From the late Heian period onward, it adopted a unique form of worship through Shinbutsu-shugo (syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism). The current buildings were reconstructed after the 12th year of Hoho (1727 CE).
