History
According to its origins, it was one of the sub-temples founded by Kukai. In 880 CE (Gangyo 4), Emperor Yozei granted it a shoen (manorial estate), leading to its peak prosperity. However, all halls and temples were destroyed by fire during the Onin War, leaving only Hosho-in to continue the Dharma lamp in a thatched hut. In 1665 CE (Kanbun 5), the monk Shuseki rebuilt the temple, and in 1780 CE (An'ei 9), Gion-do Hall was established as the Oku-no-in (inner sanctuary) by the ascetic Yoshikai.
