Houbyouzan Jurinji (Juurinji Temple on Mount Houbyou)
高砂市高砂町横町1074
A Jodo-shu (Pure Land) temple of the Sennyu Zenrinji branch located in Takasago City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is counted as the third of the twenty-five sites associated with the founder Honen. The temple complex centers on the main hall, which is a designated cultural property of Hyogo Prefecture, and includes other structures such as the Goeido (hall of the Buddha image) and the Ohojo (large dormitory).
History
According to tradition, the temple was established in 815 CE as a Shingon-shu temple after Kukai returned to Japan from Tang China. In 1207 CE, Shinjaku-bo, a disciple of Honen, converted it into a Jodo-shu temple, revering Honen as the founding patriarch of its revival. Later, the temple's mountain name was changed to Houbyouzan following the donation of a hanging scroll in which Honen praised the site.
