Founded in 1371 by Okuyama Asufuji, with Muwen Genzen serving as the founding monk. The temple later underwent restoration under Tokugawa Ieyasu and received donations from Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1903, it became an independent head temple of the Rinzai-shu Houkouji-ha sect.
