養老二年(七一八)に宇佐八幡神の化身といわれる仁聞が奇瑞を感じて寺を建てた。神亀四年(七二七)に水田と山林を寄進され、天平勝宝二年(七五〇)には寺田三〇町を寄進された。大正年間に現在地へ移転した。
