Hozonji Temple - Tree Burial
あきる野市小川101
A Nichiren sect temple and the only Nichiren temple in Nishitama District. The grounds feature a 2.16-meter-tall Ho-kaku-in-to (reliquary stupa) constructed with Ina stone.
History
Founded during the Genwa era by Aoki Kansaburo, a member of the Tada clan, with Nichin of Hozon-in serving as the founding monk. During the Ho-ei era, Mizutai Shinano-no-kami designated the temple as a place of prayer, leading to the change of the mountain name from Tozoyama to Mizutaiyama. The temple site corresponds to the former residence (Ogawa Castle) of Ogawa Tosa-no-kami.
