In 894 CE (Kampi 6), a fisherman named Yoiichi pulled a statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) from the sea and founded Iyo-ji temple with it as the principal image. The temple was later revived as a temple of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai school. In 1653 CE (Joyo 2), it was renamed Ichihara-ji, and in 1790 CE (Kansei 2), it transferred to the Myoshin-ji school. In 1953, the Ichihara Yakushi Kyodan was established, and this temple became its head temple.
