A temple of the Onjo-ha branch of Shingon Buddhism located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is also known as Shengozan and Daiho-in. It is the 83rd station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and is adjacent to Tamura Shrine.
History
Founded during the Daiho era (701–704 CE) by Gi-en as a temple of the Hosso school, it was originally called Daiho-in. During the Wado era, the monk Gyoki renovated the buildings and renamed it Ichinomiya-ji. In the Daito era, Kukai organized the precincts and converted the temple to Shingon Buddhism. In 1679 (Enpō 7), when the lord of Takamatsu Domain, Matsudaira Tsunatsune, converted Tamura Shrine to Shinto, Ichinomiya-ji was the only temple permitted to remain. It was separated and relocated, assuming the role of the 83rd station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage with a statue of Kannon (Avalokiteshvara) as its principal image.
