History

The shrine's origins are said to date back to 1470 CE (Bunmei 2), when Matsudaira Chikatsuna relocated the deity from Iga Province to the current site as the ancestral deity of the Matsudaira clan. In 1535 CE (Tenbun 4), Matsudaira Hirotaka performed prayers for victory in battle and constructed the shrine buildings. Subsequently, Tokugawa Ieyasu and Tokugawa Iemitsu carried out renovations and expansions of the structures. During the Edo period, it became customary for the lord of Okazaki Domain to perform proxy worship on the anniversary of Ieyasu's death.

What visitors say

The shrine is characterized by its grand buildings, which feature the hollyhock crest associated with the Tokugawa clan in various locations, and a precinct that evokes a strong historical atmosphere. There is a large lotus pond, and the lotus flowers in summer are spectacular; however, since the flowers close early, visiting in the early morning is recommended.
