In 1053 CE (Kōhei 6), Minamoto no Yoshitsune enshrined a deity from Ishizumi Hachiman Grand Shrine. Following an order from Minamoto no Yoritomo, the shrine was dedicated in Iino Village, Iwase District. In 1598 CE (Keichō 7), after the Battle of Sekigahara, Tokugawa Ieyasu's hereditary vassal Torii Tadamasa entered the area, and the shrine was relocated to its current location in Hachiman-kōji. As one of the largest shrines in the southern Hamadori region, it has long been revered by local power holders.
