Ikago Shrine
長浜市木之本町大音688
A shrine listed in the Engishiki (a 10th-century codex) and regarded as the finest in the northern part of Lake Biwa, it is known for possessing the only 'Ikago-style torii gate' of its unique shape in Japan.
History
It is said that the shrine buildings were established before 680 CE (Hakuhō 10) by Ikago Sukune Toyatsu, a descendant of Emperor Tenmu. In 859 CE (Jōgan 1), the shrine's rank was elevated from Junior Fifth Rank Upper with the Eighth Rank of Merit. It was classified as a Meishin Taisha (Grand Shrine of the Famous Deity) under the Engi regulations. The shrine received patronage from Ashikaga Takauji and the Azai clan, but the shrine buildings and ancient records were destroyed by fire during the Battle of Shizugatake.

What visitors say
Located on the shores of Lake Biwa, the shrine is particularly famous as a spot for viewing Yaezakura (eight-petaled cherry blossoms). During the night cherry blossom season, lighting is installed, allowing visitors to enjoy the blossoms alongside the starry sky. The main hall is well-maintained, and Goshuin (the shrine's calligraphic seal stamp) can be obtained at the shrine office located next to the main hall.
