The temple's origins trace back to Kawase Gonjuro Hengyo Munetsuna, who received the temple name from the high priest Rennyo of Ishiyama Hongwan-ji and established a nembutsu (Buddha-recitation) practice ground in the Imai district. During the Toyotomi Hideyoshi regime, the family name was changed from Kawase to Imai, and around 1600, the temple was named Shonin-ji. In the 10th year of the Meiji era (1877), it served as the imperial residence during an imperial tour.
