According to temple tradition, it was founded by Kukai. During the Kamakura period, it flourished as the administrative temple for the Ota estate under the jurisdiction of Koyasan in Kii Province. At that time, 12 branch temples existed along the approach path extending from the main gate. Currently, only two branch temples remain: Anrakui and Fukuchi-in.
