The Shinsen Minoshiki (a historical record of Mino Province) records that when Takasu was first settled, a white fox appeared from the Susuhara (reed field) in the Yamate area. Some, finding this strange, followed its trail and discovered a sacred statue resembling the two-armed form of Benzaiten (the goddess of arts and eloquence), which they enshrined as Inari Daijin. Later, in 1640 CE (Kangyo 17), the Ogasawara family, led by the Tosa-no-kami (Governor of Tosa Province), relocated to this area.
