It is said that the Satsuma clan's devotion to Inari began when a fox lit a fire to protect the birth of Tadamasa Shimazu. The shrine was moved from Ichiki during the time of the ninth lord, Tamenobu Shimazu, and relocated to its current site during the reign of the fifteenth lord, Takahisa Shimazu. During the Bunroku and Keicho campaigns in Korea, it is said that white and red foxes caused the gunpowder magazine to explode, destroying the Ming army.
