In ancient times, a white-haired old fox lived in the village and produced auspicious omens. Consequently, the villagers built a small shrine in 1496 CE (Meiō 5). When the local lord visited to worship, he named the village Kitsuneana (Fox Hole), and the shrine was named Inari Shrine based on the legend of the white fox. On January 17, 1686 CE (Jōkyō 3), prayers were offered for the safety of the village and a bountiful harvest of the five grains.
